I'm fine with leaving the phrase "In God We Trust" on our currency. But in which God do we trust? Ah, there's the rub. _________________ "All wish to possess knowledge, but few, comparatively speaking, are willing to pay the price." - Juvenal |

People just need something to get worked up over... It is not even referencing Christianity... If it said "In Jesus we Trust" I could see their point, but the name "God" is very open ended and open to whatever interpretation the reader gives it. _________________ Nowhere does the Bible state that the sexual orientation of homosexuality is sinful it merely instructs anyone, gay or straight, that any sexual act that does not spring from a place of love, respect and commitment to the other person involved is sinful. |

It's a blatant violation of the separation between church and state. It should totally go. _________________ "Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction."

Do you have any specific arguments against his viewpoints, or are you happy to just insult him? _________________ "Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction."

Do you guys even know the first thing about Sam Harris or his writings? Have you read even one of his books? _________________ "Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction."

"Letter to a Christian Nation" and "End of Faith". They suck!! Harris is "pop atheism". His followers seem to be mostly young people who are rebelling against the religion their parents raised them in.

Interesting answer. Have you read either one?

It isn't pop atheism at all. (In fact, is there even such a thing?) Harris is a modern intellectual atheist. He's had several debates with highly-regarded religious leaders, and he is by no means out of place when talking at universities or at conferences with the likes of Dawkins, Dennett, Weinberg, etc.
As far as I can tell, you're just calling names. Slander such as your 'zero dollar bill' comment above, and your 'pop atheism' jibe just now are completely devoid of any intellectual content. If you want to address any points which he may have made, then go ahead. But if you want to lower the level of discourse here by calling names, the only person who that reflects badly on is you. Not very Christian. _________________ "Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction."

Well, Ryck seemed to like it, although his monitor didn't do so well.

Like using the term "pop culture" or "latest fad".

I'll go to the Sam Harris thread you started if I wish to get involved.

I believe I'm following the forum rules. I didn't attack any forum member. I said Sam Harris' two books "suck". Sort of like when YOU said Richard Milton's book was "garbage" on another thread. Did you even read it?
~=~=~=~
Now, back on topic. I would have said "Richard Dawkins" should be on the "Zero dollar bill" but I thought it inappropriate to put a citizen of the British Empire on U.S. currency. So Sam Harris wins the honor.

Just because the peanut gallery snickered at your jibe doesn't mean that it was a very Christian thing to say.

Except that atheism is not a popular movement by any stretch of the imagination. I wish it were.
And once again (because you seem to be dodging the question): Have you read either of Sam Harris' books?

Funny, from where I'm standing it already seems very much like you not only want to get involved, but you're ALREADY involved. _________________ "Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction."
