The bill (AB 2747) gives authority to several categories of medical professionals to declare people terminal and then to use palliative, or terminal, sedation while they die. Randy Thomasson, founder and president of Campaign for Children and Families (CCF), explains.
"Doctors, nurses, and doctor's assistants can call a person terminal, [saying] they're in shock, they're depressed. And then immediately go into the end-of-life options, including sedating them so that they are unconscious without food and water, and they are dehydrated to death within 5-to-10 days normally," he points out.
The only difference with the Oregon assisted0suicide law is the medication, he says. "They give you a different drug, which will put you to sleep, basically shriveling [you] to death – a fate worse than doomed dogs and cats at the animal shelter," Thomasson adds.
Thomasson's group has launched a telephone campaign to convince Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to veto the bill. |

Man. Why do people care so much if other people want to off themselves? It's their choice, better to have it done in a safe environment than jumping off of a building.
Though this method is rather ridiculous. If I had to choose my own death (death penalty/assisted/whatever) I'd demand an airtight room where all the air gets replaced by CO2.

Because many times people who want to off themselves are making that decision at the lowest time of their life, which is not even a good time to decide what to eat, let alone make a choice between life and death.
Take it from someone who has been there.
Secondly, the article seems to be saying that the person may not even have to decide -- some medical person may have the right to decide for them. That's just plain scary.
