Quote:
We build Biblical harps, the restoration of King David style harps. We call them the Kinor David, equivalent to a small harp, and the nevel equivalent to a lyre. They haven't been in existence for approximately 2,000 years. About 25 years ago, we brought it back, to its rightful place here in Israel. Some harps are built personally for people on order from our web site. We hand carve designs as the customer asks. There are different woods to choose from, many woods from Israel, some from Africa, very beautiful and musical woods. We also build harps for the Temple Institute, hopefully for the future temple...Why is it so important? These are Jewish instruments. The fact that they've returned means good times will be coming. There will be a time when we will play these instruments in the Temple. We won't have to worry about making money or terrorism or health problems. We will sit around and play our harps and thank Hashem for everything and bring into this world a great, great joy.

The full article contains a link to the manufacturer's website. You can hear one of their harp's being played at the website. There is even a link that let's you try plucking one yourself! Very Happy

(It sounds great! I wish I could afford to purchase one.)

This week on The Naked Archaeologist:

Quote:
The Search for King David's Harp
Airs on Wednesday, August 6 at 8:00pm ET

King David, biblical king of Israel, was a man of many talents. He slew Goliath. He conquered the Philistines. His sex life was X-rated, but he also played the harp. Apparently he got pretty good at it. There's a passage in 1 Samuel that says King Saul wanted a "cunning harp player" to calm his nerves when the evil spirit was upon him. So David was summoned and when he played for Saul, sure enough, the evil spirit departed from him. What did David play for Saul? The Hebrew Bible says he played a "kinnor." In many editions of the bible, this is translated as harp, but "kinnor" is also known as a lyre. What can archaeology tell us about King Davidıs instrument and can it bring his music back to life?

This episode will also air on Thursday, August 7 at 12:00am ET; Sunday, August 10 at 1:00pm ET and 6:00pm ET on History International Channel.

I watched the Program this evening. He visited this business in the final segment of the show. The harp was played by the female owner of the business and sounded beautiful. How historically accurate the reproduced harp may be is, I think, debatable. Historically accurate or not, it's still a very nice instrument.

I'm curious. Do they have a CD or downloadable music one can hear?

You can hear the harp played in the video links or pluck one yourself on a link. I didn't see anything on their website about CD's or downloads (other than the options I've listed). You could send them an email and ask. (I may do so myself!)

Fascinating stuff. Thanks, Mattathias.

I think that such harps (or lyres) were often used as a prayer/meditation tool, and highy revered as such.
